How Flexible do you need to be?

By Tom Goodwin

Have you ever juggled balls in the air? One ball – simple. Two balls – doable. Three balls – with practice. Four balls or more – leave that to the professionals.

Scalability is very much like juggling. It is a constant need that is hard to fulfill, hard to balance, and even harder to master. Have too little of something and things don’t work effectively; Too much and you are wasting resources. Getting the balance correct is a constant equation where the right answer is financially responsible, and performance optimized.

Scalability in your IT and applications environment is the perfect example of how hard it is to get the balance right, especially with on-premise servers and storage. If you don’t have enough capability or storage, users will complain, executives will fret, and the business could possibly have adverse financial impacts. Making a change in capacity or capability is usually expensive, takes a long time to implement and requires increased investment in IT staff to implement. On the other hand, you can over-provision to make sure that performance doesn’t suffer; however, over provisioning can lead to old equipment taking up space and energy that could be very costly, especially if your storage or CPU demand reduces.

If your business is growing at a rapid pace or your computing needs are cyclic, then moving your IT or storage requirements to a hosted environment could provide you the greater flexibility and reduced costs versus the on-prem solution. The discussion regarding costs was in an earlier blog; the focus here is on flexibility.

With a hosted solution, you can scale up or down as needed for your business and computing needs with no need to change your infrastructure. This allows for quick adjustment to the company’s needs without extensive capacity planning or long-term budgeting. This frees up the company to adjust their IT, computing, or storage requirements as needs dictate.

Generally, hosted solutions are on a pay as you go model which means flexibility extends to financial flexibility. This financial flexibility includes bringing IT costs into alignment with revenue in a more direct manner. This gives decision makers a better idea on the true costs for providing services to their customers.

Flexibility in storage and computing needs as presented by the hosted solution frees up IT resources to focus on the true needs of the business rather than having to waste time on infrastructure monitoring and fretting over ancillary support – things that are a constant annoyance in the on-prem solution.
