The World According to Barack, No. 2

by Paul R. Hollrah

June 20, 2008 Obama spoke at a fundraiser in Jacksonville, Florida.  In his speech, he said, “It is going to be very difficult for Republicans to run on their stewardship of the economyor their outstanding foreign policy.”

Was he speaking of the economy that has kept inflation at low single digits for nearly eight years, while maintaining essentially full employment?  Was he speaking of the economy that has experienced steady growth while recovering from the economic fallout of 9/11?  Was he speaking of the economy that experienced steady growth while the country fought expensive wars on two fronts?

And was he speaking of a foreign policy that is bringing a reduction in violence and democratic institutions to Iraq?  Is he speaking of a foreign policy that is now bringing success in our efforts to forestall North Korea’s efforts to become the world’s next nuclear power?

While telling the crowd he was confident that he would win on the issues, he went on to say, “We know what kind of campaign they're going to run.  They're going to try to make you afraid.  They're going to try to make you afraid of… me.  He’s young and inexperienced and he’s got a funny name.  And… did I mention… he's black?"

Yes, Barack, we all know you’re black… you wear your blackness on your shoulder… and just in case you’re wondering, fear of you is not prospective.  Those with any brains at all are already scared to death of you.  You should understand is that it’s not the color of your skin that makes you unfit to be our Commander in Chief, it’s the color of your politics… which is mostly RED.

June 20, 2008 – Speaking at a meeting of Democratic governors in Chicago, Obama stood at a podium arrogantly decorated with a blue and white quasi-presidential seal.

At the center of the blue and white seal was a stylized eagle clutching a sheaf of arrows in its left foot and an olive branch in its right.  Above the eagle’s head, where normally we would see the Latin phrase E Pluribus Unum” (Out of many, one), Obama had substituted the phrase “Vero Possumus,” which translates roughly to “It is possible” or “Yes we can.”

In the outer ring of the seal, where normally we would see the words “Seal of the President of the United States,” were the words “Obama for America,” along with the Obama campaign’s web address.  And instead of a shield across the eagle’s chest, the Obama seal featured a large “O” with a rising sun at its center, an apparent attempt to symbolize hope for the future.

Is it any wonder then that the tin-hat soldiers of the radical left are so enthralled?  One leftist writer tells us that Obama will “unleash the power of government to set things right in a world currently turned upside down (NASA has always told us that, for space cadets, there is no up or down).”  He says, “Heaven on Earth is indeed appealing rather than having to wait.”

But then there are those for whom the “Obama effect” is a bit more “earthy.”  Chris Matthews of MSNBC has said, “This is bigger than Kennedy… this is the New Testament.  I felt this thrill going up my leg.  I mean, I don’t have that too often…”  We think Matthews was confused.  It wasn’t the feel of a thrill going up his leg… it was probably a very warm feeling of something running down his leg.  If Matthews’ would rather not see his socks in a glass case next to Monica Lewinsky’s blue dress, he might want to burn them immediately.

Just how arrogant does one have to be not to realize that the quasi-presidential seal was way over the top… totally inappropriate?  As one blogger put it, although Obama “insists on the suppression of ego, he just didn’t realize it might come off as egotistical to debut his very own presidential seal…”

But most important of all, if the Bush Administration had any guts Obama would have a much larger problem.  18 USC Sec. 713 reads as follows:

(a) Whoever knowingly displays any printed or other likeness of the great seal of the United States, or of the seals of the President or the Vice President of the United States…  for the purpose of conveying, or in a manner reasonably calculated to convey, a false impression of sponsorship or approval by the Government of the United States… shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

(b) Whoever, except as authorized under regulations promulgated by the President and published in the Federal Register, knowingly manufactures, reproduces, sells, or purchases for resale, either separately or appended to any article manufactured or sold, any likeness of the seals of the President or Vice President, or any substantial part thereof, except for manufacture or sale of the article for the official use of the Government of the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than six months, or both.

Eugene V. Debs, a socialist, ran for president from the comfort of a prison cell in the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in 1920, but we’ve never had the candidate of a major political party try it.  Liberals and Democrats are fond of saying this is a “year of firsts.”  Well, let’s make it a year of real firsts for them.  Arrest Obama and send him to jail.  With a speedy trial he should be getting out of jail at around the end of January 2009… just days after John McCain is sworn in as the 44th President of the United States.
